Language and close-textual analysis
1) Narrative:at the start of the episode the shadow king kills one of his servants and as he does April brandishes swords and then burns the floor which leaves a burn a scorch mark . April is seemed to be very stressed and ram comforts her and takes her to his car in which they have an encounter with her dad she nearly kills him but she stops and he runs away. Then the new had teacher appears out of nowhere and tells them to be om their way. they go home and Ram and April have a session in the bedroom. But since Her and the shadow king are connected he has to do the same with one of his helpers.
Character: April is seen as the hero character type because she goes to the Underneath to fight against the shadow king. Ram and April's loving relationship is developed through Ram being there to comfort April and their sex scene. Charlie and Matteius' relationship is also loving but goes on a rocky side as he dosent tell him the true context of the cabinet.
Iconography: All of the deadly flower petals eating into every living flesh they make contact with and eat it away.
Setting: The episode spans over many settings which enforce the genre of sci fi as The school is one of the main settings we see in this episode and this setting suggests that the show has schools are a standard convention of the genre.
2) The episode starts in equilibrium with students in their lessons, April's heart still getting shared between the shadow king and herself. This equilibrium is disrupted by April's dodgy behaviour at school and well as her crazy confrontation with her dad. This is recognised by the machete that she wields as well as her father dashing away. There is however reparation when her father returns and tries to make amends for his crimes as well as when April heals her mother's from the wheelchair.
3.The hero character type is shown through Charlie or April, as Charlie is being tasked with saving the Earth using the Cabinet of Souls, whereas April is on a quest to retrieve her heart. It could also be argued that miss Quill is the hero as she is attempting to find a solution to the issue of the pettels. The Princess in this episode could be seen as April since she is seemingly rescued by Ram. The villain in this episode is without a shadow of a doubt the shadow king since he directly attempts to stop April from reclaiming her heart, in trying to take it for himself.
4) What enigma and action codes (Barthes) can you find in Co-owner of a Lonely Heart? Make specific, detailed reference to the text using media terminology (e.g. media language - camera shots, diegetic/non-diegetic sound, mise-en-scene etc.)
bit of a dodgy question sir
5) In the shadow kings planet the world seems to be dark and cold with not any sun and seems oddly volcanic which is the complete opposite to earth which is very bright with light and has a vast amount of colours.
Representations
1)The female April is portrayed as a heroic and brave, teenage girl but she is also the protagonist which is not normally the case. Male characters are usually associated with the hero role but the fact that this role is played by a female could potentially change the mindset of gender roles.
2) The representation of age is clearly shown in this episode of Class with Aprils mum mum being so concerned with her and Ram. The representation of teens is also reinforced through April's challenging behaviour toward her mother by getting a bit rowdy and answering back.
3) There is a diversity within the series as there is a balance with all races and BAME being clearly shown
4)Charlie and Matteius have a gay relationship which is accepted by the modern British society and evenin the episodes.
5)Aprils mum is disabled and has to be in a wheelchair but even that dosent stop he from being feared by Ram when he is caught screwing he daughter.
